Principles of Biology II: Organisms in the Environment

Course number: BIOL 0102

Course length: 60 hrs

Course credits: 3 credits

Course description:

This course emphasizes principles with wide applications to all living organisms, including structure and function, mechanisms of inheritance, the diversity of life, evolution and adaptations to the environment. A comparative approach to the unity and diversity of organisms is stressed. Topics include a survey of the major taxonomic groups of living organisms, the evidence for evolution, natural selection, the nature of scientific knowledge, and the impact of humans on the ecology of populations, communities and ecosystems. This core introductory science course is designed for biology and art majors and lays the foundations on which the higher-level courses in biology are based. Lab sessions reinforce subject matter presented in lectures.
