Course description:
This course is an introduction to the structure and function of organisms with particular reference to molecular, biochemical, and physiological aspects of the living world in both plants and animals. Topics include chemical principles and the biological chemistry associated with cellular structure and function; taxonomy and the organization of life; the basic structure of cells; energy and cellular respiration; and the genetic basis of cellular division, regulation, and the means of inheritance. This core introductory science course is designed for biology and art majors and lays the foundations on which the higher-level courses in biology are based. Lab sessions reinforce subject matter presented in lectures.
