Course description:

This course provides an overview of the family in contemporary Canadian society, including the shifting patterns, demands, roles, and values that impact family relations. Focus is on the ecology of the modern family with particular reference to northern and indigenous families. It is designed to deepen the student’s understanding of, and empathy for, the families with whom they will be working.  The educator’s relationship with parents and other family and community stakeholders is discussed. The course explores the educator’s role in fostering a relationship of mutual respect, enhancing the parent-child relationship, and serving as an advocate for young children and their families.
