Course description:
Social Studies 140 is at a grade 10 equivalency level and consists of four main topic areas: Pre-contact Ancestral Identity, Human Response to Geographic Pressures, Post-contact Ancestral Identity, and Indigenous Rights. This course will provide learners with diverse opportunities to develop knowledge and critical thinking skills interrogating historical, geographical, and societal perspectives in the contexts of both pre- and post – European contact. Through exploration of population, geographic, and climactic pressures, students will gain a deeper understanding of migratory, economic, and political shifts that evolved through generational memory. Students will study various primary and secondary history documents, maps and treaties, leveraging Indigenous knowledge in authentic and meaningful ways.
Beyond classroom instruction, discussions, and collaborative projects, the course is designed to also utilize locally developed learning resources, guest speakers, and field studies. Upon completion of this course, students may choose to continue their studies in ALBE Social Studies 20-2.
