ALBE Science 140
Course number: SCIE 0018
Course length: 100 hrs
Course description:
Science 140 covers a variety of interconnected topics related to physics, cell biology, anatomy and physiology, and chemistry at a grade 10 equivalency level. It builds on students’ experiences from life and from previous courses, and provides preparation for pre-college level science courses.
The first part of the course focuses on cell biology which includes topics on DNA structure and function, mutation, patterns of inheritance, evolution, and active and passive transport. The second section is devoted to anatomy and physiology which delves into the nervous system and endocrine system.
The third section focuses on chemistry and covers topics on Lewis diagrams, acids and bases, naming, chemical reaction, poly-atomic ions, balancing equations, and mass conservation. The final section of this course is on physics and it covers topics on energy and electricity. Beyond classroom instruction, discussions, and collaborative projects, the course is designed to enable students independently research issues and reflect upon the role of science in society. Upon completion of this course, students may choose to continue their studies in ALBE Biology 20, Chemistry 20, and Physics 20.
