ALBE Science 130
Course number: SCIE 0017
Course length: 100 hrs
Course description:
Science 130 covers a variety of interconnected topics related to physics, biology, and chemistry. The first part of the course focuses on biology which entails knowledge of the human body’s digestive, muscular-skeletal, circulatory, and respiratory systems, as well as an understanding of how ecosystems function. It also includes an introduction to cell anatomy including but not limited to cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, as well as plants and animals.
The next section focuses on chemistry which introduces topics on periodic table, atomic model (Bohr), compounds, pure substances and mixtures, valency, and WHMIS. The final section of this course is on physics and it covers topics on motion (speed, distance, and acceleration), force (Newton’s 3 laws of motion), as well as simple machines (such as levers, gears, and pulleys) and their mechanical advantages. Beyond classroom instruction, discussions, and collaborative projects, the course is designed to enable students independently research issues and reflect upon the role of science in society. Upon completion of this course, students may choose to continue their studies in ALBE Science 140.
