NTPC Bursary Program

The NWT Power Corporation is dedicated to developing a skilled, committed and professional workforce and wants to encourage northern residents to further their education in order to develop a sustainable local workforce. The following bursary program is being offered to assist students with their post-secondary education in an effort to empower residents to attain their career aspirations.

A $1,000 bursary will be offered for post-secondary education in any field the Corporation employs. Preference will be given to those students furthering their education in fields the Corporation is having challenges recruiting. This bursary will be available to one student in every community the Corporation services or has a presence. It is open to all current post-secondary students who attended high school in the Northwest Territories.

Applicants must be enrolled in a field of study the Corporation employs, which may include, but is not limited to, the following:

Engineering, Technologies or Computer Science programs,
Business, Commerce or Accounting programs,
Health, Safety or Environmental programs, and
Various Trades.

In situations where more than one applicant per community has met the criteria for the bursary, the applicant enrolled in the field of study that is most challenging for the Corporation to recruit for will be given priority consideration.

The application deadline is September 30. Funds will be awarded via cheques mailed directly to the recipients or direct deposit.

Bursary Communication 2021-2022

Imperial Oil Scholarships – Sahtu Indigenous Scholarship Program

Deadline: September 15 — Value: $3500

Imperial’s Norman Wells operation offers these scholarships each year to Sahtu beneficiaries entering post-secondary studies. The award is designed to cover tuition, other compulsory fees, textbooks and supplies, while also assisting with living expenses during
the course of the academic year. The maximum amount of the award is $3,500 per year for college and technical schools and $4,500 per year for university.

The purpose of the scholarship program is to encourage and assist Sahtu beneficiaries to pursue undergraduate post-secondary studies in disciplines relevant to the petroleum industry and Imperial’s Norman Wells operation. In conjunction with other recruitment and on-the-job training programs, the Sahtu Indigenous Scholarship Program forms an important part of Imperial’s strategy for increasing the employment of Sahtu beneficiaries at Imperial’s Norman Wells operation.

Eligibility requirements: Be a Sahtu beneficiary; Maintain residency in the Northwest Territories; Enrolment in disciplines relevant to the Norman Wells operation will be considered a priority. Relevant disciplines include but are not limited to: engineering, geology, geophysics, accounting, computer science, business administration and petroleum technologies; Be registered as a full-time student in a recognized educational institution.

Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government’s Scholarship and Bursary

Deadline: June 30 & October 31 — Value: Various

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP, BURSARY, OR UPGRADING FUND students must be:

enrolled as a beneficiary in the Sahtú Comprehensive Agreement with the Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government;

accepted as a full-time student in an accredited university, college or in a certificate/diploma program; and

must have a 70% average or equivalent.

Mitch Landry (Corbeau) Memorial Award

This award was established to honour Mitch Landry (Corbeau), a well-respected Elder of the Dehcho. Mitch was born in Fort Providence in 1930 and was raised traditionally in the Dehcho Territory. Mitch attended the Indian Residential School where he learned to speak French and English. Mitch served on various councils, boards and committees. In his political career, Mitch was very passionate about the land and the future of our youth. Mitch opened many meetings and gatherings with strong prayers. He held the highest regard for the land and respect for the Dene. $3,000 each will be awarded annually to two Dehcho Dene post-secondary students pursuing studies in Environment & Resource Management, Humanities/Social Sciences, Aboriginal Languages and/or Linguistics.

Lena Gosselin Memorial Fund

Established in memory of Lena Gosselin in 2019, the Lena Gosselin Memorial Fund was established to support individuals seeking training in the area of executive office administration and management with a continued interest to work within the Northwest Territories. To be eligible, applicants must be a Northwest Territories (NWT) resident (minimum of two years); enrolled in an office administration/executive assistant program in the Northwest Territories or be currently in an administrative role, and must submit a personal essay: tell us who you are, personal accomplishments, indicate why such a program is of interest, motivation for entering the field, and career aspirations/interests/goals related to the Northwest Territories.

Applicants are eligible to re-apply for grants in successive years; however previous receipt does not guarantee future awards.

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:

Enrolment in an office administration/executive assistant program in the NWT or in a current administrative assistant role.
A written statement (500 words max) outlining:
- The benefit they will obtain from the grant/scholarship,
- Willingness to be involved in promotional activities in relation to this grant
- Career aspirations for the future as related to office administration/management.

Educational progress, copy of enrollment registration
Name of current employer and supervisor with contact information

A Proof of Residency (PDF 176kb) form must be submitted along with the application.

Town of Inuvik Office Administration Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the Office Administration certificate program at Aurora College, Aurora Campus. Applicants should:
• Submit a copy of their transcripts from fall semester (obtain from Admissions Officer)
• Submit up-to-date marks, verified by their instructor
• Submit 1-2 page (typed, double spaced) letter on “any innovative ideas you, as a resident or community member, have for possible improvements to the town of Inuvik
** Preference may be given to residents of Inuvik.
